ROAR Region 6 Report – October 2008

Recently I had the distinct pleasure of being the Designated ROAR Official at the 2008 Electric On-Road Nationals. This event was held in Jonesboro, Arkansas at the R/C Hobbies Raceway. Quinton Robbins, our host, went all out to make everyone feel welcome. It seemed that Quinton, his family and Victoria (Quinton’s significant other), were having a competition to see who could make us the most welcome. Let me give you an example. How many races have you attended where the hosts had a hospitality night or welcome party? Well, at R/C Hobbies Raceway, after the first day of qualifying, Quinton did just that. After giving us enough time to finish with race preparations we were delighted to be offered drinks, snacks and entertainment. Talk about “raising the bar”, these “southerners” know how to make you feel welcome!

Racing at this event was fast and sometimes furious. There was some folks that did not do as well as they thought that they should and showed it. But hey, who was driving their car? All said and done, the vast majority of racers had a good time.

I was very impressed with the RMT. They had to overcome major problems that they should have never experienced. We were very lucky to even have this event start on the day that it was scheduled. ALL of the ROAR equipment – every little bit of it – was LOST in shipment. The RMT had to beg and borrow everything needed to run this event from local sources. Once the equipment was acquired, it had to be mated, as nothing matched. All of the racing programs had to be downloaded. All of the pre-entries were reentered. All of the work that was done before traveling to Arkansas had to be redone. WHAT A HASSEL! Throughout this whole procedure, the RMT persevered. Never did I see tempers flair. I did see however a lot of sweat and clinched jaws. At last report, none of the missing shipment has been recovered.

Once all was in readiness, the racing started on time. The event ran smooth as silk with no delays. With only a slight rain scare the weather cooperated with us. I look forward to returning to R/C Hobbies Raceway and seeing Quinton Robbins and family again.

ROAR Region 6 Report – August 2008

I know this posting is looooong past due, but I, with the help of Fred Hohwart and Webmaster Corey have finally figured out how to do this. Being computer illiterate on my part has not helped.

Quinton Robbins, owner of R/C Hobbies Raceway in Jonesboro, Arkansas has agreed to host the first on road electric state championship in recorded history. R/C Hobbies raceway is located in the heart of Jonesboro’s Hotel / restaurant district. Be sure to bring the family. A shopping mall is very close and there is miniature golf next door.

The results of the Arkansas State Electric On Road Championships were as follows:

Stock Sedan A Main – TQ, Jason Wilkie; 1^st, Jason Wilkie; 2^nd, Drew Ellis; 3^rd, Quinton Robbins.

Stock Sedan B Main – 1^st, David Bates; 2^nd, Jay Martin; 3dr, Tom Colclasure.

Modified Sedan A Main – TQ, Andrew Ellis; 1^st, Andrew Ellis; 2^nd, Jason Wilkie; 3^rd, David Bates.

M-Class A Main Expert – TQ, Lee Thompson; 1^st, Jay Martin; 2^nd, Lee Thompson; 3^rd, Charles Leech.

M-Class A Main Novice – TQ, Adam Johnson; 1^st, Adam Johnson; 2^nd, Tony Johnson; 3^rd, Jammie Barret.

By all reports, everyone had a great time. I became ill and had to send an assistant, who used my hotel reservation. Rest assured, I will be there next time.

The picture below will give you an idea of what R/C Hobbies Raceway looks like. Lots of room on the drivers stand and a wall that will keep spectators off of the racetrack.

This year our Paved Regional races were split into two locations and I think that they were extra special. Berry Voltz in an effort to promote R/C racing acquired permission to set up a very large on road track in our local Bass Pro Shops parking lot. I have included a picture of the drivers stand with the Bass Pro Shops in the background. Although the weather turned out to be a little iffy, and the track had to be dried more than once, we were able to complete the day. Berry was heard to say more than once “some of these people came a long distance to race and by golly we are going to race”. The counting ran smoothly and the racing had no protests. Berry Voltz asked me, as the ROAR Representative to tech the winners of each class. I didn’t mind doing it until I had to disqualify a car. It always hurts to have to disqualify a top finisher. The driver saw his mistake and accepted the disqualification very graciously.

The results of the Region 6 On Road Championships were as follows:

Nitro Sedan – TQ, Berry Voltz; 1^st, Berry Voltz; 2^nd, Mike Clark; 3^rd, Juan Blaylock.

Stock Sedan B Main – 1^st, John David Champion; 2^nd, Juan Blaylock; 3^rd, Allen Ainsworth.

Stock Sedan A Main – TQ, Chris Adams; 1^st, Chris Adams; 2^nd, Terry Vaughn; 3^rd, Danny Beachamp.

19 Turn Sedan – TQ, Chris Adams; 1^st Chris Adams; 2^nd, Terry Vaughn; 3^rd, David Bates

1/12^th Scale 19 Turn – TQ David Bates; 1^st, David Bates; 2^nd, Michael Hudson; 3^rd Allen Ainsworth.

The next day, we all moved, bag and baggage, to Small Cars Unlimited where the Region 6 Paved Oval regionals were held. The weatherperson messed with us all day Saturday, but Sunday was absolutely great. As usual, Toni cooked both breakfast and lunch. I did see some “baaad” racers eating some of Toni’s home made brownies for breakfast. One guy told me that he was afraid that all of the brownies would be gone by lunch.

The results of the Region 6 Paved oval Championships were as follows:

NASCAR 4 Cell 19 Turn – TQ, Edward Beachamp; 1^st, Edward Beachamp; 2^nd, Casey Rocquin; 3^rd, Ronnie Rocquin.

NASCAR 6 Cell Stock – TQ David Wilson; 1^st, David Wilson; 2^nd, Michael Hudson; 3^rd, Danny Beachamp.

I believe that for all involved, this weekend will be remembered as a most pleasant event. I for one enjoyed everyone’s company. I am happy to report that everyone returned home safely. I always worry about a racer with not enough sleep getting home safely.

Be sure to watch for my next report. I will have the results of the first Arkansas On Road State Championships to be held in many, many years. Quinton at R/C Hobbies Raceway, in Jonesboro AR, will be hosting this event.

Last, but far from least – Thank you Dawn Sanchez – for all that you have done and will continue to do for ROAR. I am sure that you do not hear it enough, but you are appreciated!!!!!
